what is stem?
What is STEM ? The terms stands for science, technology, engineering and math.
Careers in these fields earn some of the most highest paying wages and individuals in these specialties fields are in high demand.
EARNING POWER
With the growing amount of graduates in STEM fields ,as with other fields, entry level job salaries are sometimes not as high as expected. However, Stem majors earn on average 26% higher salaries compared to other majors over the course of their career.
These high demand skills are being highly promoted by universities and colleges. The downside also is that the more stem graduates they are the less the starting salary. For example instead of paying a stem major 65,000 a year to start, employees may start them as low as 35,000 or 45,000 because there are more people to choose from.
Around 20% of college majors own stem degrees. 6% of all STEM majors own degrees in computer statistics and math According to the Wall Street Journal. So math, stats or computer technology is your thing may be among some of the top earners. The median salary for STEM related professions such as computer science, engineering, statistics, mathematics, actuarial science, medicine and business analyst is $60-110,000 per year.
MARKETABILITY
As with any major the more qualifications you have the more marketable your skills will be. Unfortunately many industries outsource STEM jobs to other countries for cheaper labour costs.
To stay at the top of your profession you should be constantly upgrading your skills. Additional skill sets such as business courses, financial certifications, proficiency in a foreign language, programming skills etc. will make you more marketable and improve your chances of getting that greater salary.
STEM careers are the foundations of the jobs of the future. If you are a little techie and like the sciences or math a STEM career is the way to go. Always research your chosen field and make sure you are constantly upgrading your skills. No matter what field you choose in life learning never ends.
